Scripture: Psalm 42:1–5, 11 (NASB)
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So my soul pants for You, God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God;
When shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night,
While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
4 I remember these things and pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God,
With a voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.
5 Why are you in despair, my soul?
And why are you restless within me?
Wait for God, for I will again praise Him
For the help of His presence, my God.
11 Why are you in despair, my soul?
And why are you restless within me?
Wait for God, for I will again praise Him
For the help of His presence, my God.
Devotional: Hope in the Living God
Psalm 42 is a cry from a soul that feels distant from God but refuses to give up hope. The psalmist paints a picture of deep longing—like a deer desperately searching for water, so his soul longs to be in the presence of God.
Even while overwhelmed by sorrow, he reminds himself of a powerful truth:
“Wait for God, for I will again praise Him.”
There are moments in life when we don’t feel God near, when our hearts are heavy and our hope feels faint. But Psalm 42 teaches us to preach to our own soul—to speak hope even in the dark. God’s presence is our help, and He is always worthy of our praise.
When your soul is restless, wait on Him. When you’re dry and weary, thirst for Him. He will meet you where you are and renew your strength.
Encouragement for Today:
This Sunday is Easter—Resurrection Sunday! There’s no better time to come and worship the living God than the day we celebrate our risen Savior.
Make plans now to be in church and join the celebration. Jesus is alive—and that changes everything.
Prayer:
Lord, my soul longs for You. Even when I feel far from You, I choose to hope in Your presence. Help me to wait on You and trust that You will restore my joy. Thank You for the victory of the resurrection. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Now go and let hope rise in your heart—and make sure to be in church this Easter Sunday to praise the Risen King!
